The Annual Super Mo-Rio Brother's Movember Fundraiser

THE HUMBLE BEGINNING

On Friday Nov. 21, 2014 the Super Mo-rio Brothers threw their annual fundraiser at the Old Mill Boathouse in Port Moody, B.C. to raise money for prostate cancer in the spirit of Movember. The organizing crew began its journey as friends while working for the Boathouse Restaurant in Port Moody, across the street from this years event venue.

The annual fundraising event began three years ago and has been going strong since. Last year, the team raised about $3,000 and this year they were able to raise close to $5,000. The Mo-Rios hope that the event will continue to grow and that they will gather even more community support so that they can keep raising money for the cause.

This year’s key organizers included Kurt Woodman (host), Jill Noort (bartender) and Kalee Ruhmor (DJ). They were supported by volunteers who have been coming out every year to lend a hand at the bar, sell tickets, and organize the raffle draws. The event has grown and diversified from being mainly a friends and family social, to including much of the local community.With drinks, hot dogs, toonie tosses, raffles and live entertainment- there’s something for everybody.

The entertainment

This year’s annual Super Mo-Rio event featured a wide array of entertainment. On the top set, Nick Hope who sang, played guitar, and used a sound recording pedal to create his own original beats and add them into his live music. Beside Hope is organizer and host, Kurt Woodman. On the bottom left is Shaun O’Leary who played guitar and sang. On the bottom right is organizer and DJ Kalee Ruhmor spinning on his own equipment. All performers drew a crowd of dancers onto the floor.

MO' MOMENTS

The guests at the event were a diverse group from old Boathouse friends, to family, and of course people from the community. Drink tickets were $20 for 5 and all of the red solo cups certainly indicate that the bar was a hotspot that Friday night. The Mo-Rio sisters, like smiling Sarah and Jess in the top left corner, were definitely just as important as the boys that night. Those ladies spent most of the night selling raffle tickets and helping out the organizers.

IT'S TICKET TIME

Raffle tickets were an important part of fundraising at Mo-Rio Brothers event on Friday. The tickets generated a lot of money at the charitable event. All of the prizes were donated, including gift cards to Romer’s Burger Bar, wine from Township winery, beer and merchandise from Yellow Dog Brewing Co., football and soccer jerseys, ethical bean coffee, and bottles of liquor privately donated by individuals.

THE TOONIE TOSS

The toonie toss was a very popular event at the fundraiser. Guests threw their toonies as close to the bottle as they could and whoever got the closest won it. Since it was all for charity, many winners put their prize back in the game for another round and tried to win it back. Luckily, the ticket booth was stocked with toonies.
